WPU Falls in Home Opener to Indian Hills CC
Oskaloosa–The William Penn women’s wrestling team had a tough opening to its home schedule, falling 38-7 to Indian Hills CC in non-conference dual-meet action Tuesday.
The Statesmen (0-2) picked up one win and collected points in three other matches in which they scored, but unfortunately could not keep pace with the Warriors (1-0).
The navy and gold began the night in a 10-0 hole by forfeiting at 101 and 109 pounds. Catherine Steinkamp (Fr., Quincy, Ill., Biology) tried to turn the tides, but came up just short in an 8-4 setback to Heaven-Leigh Jackson at 116 pounds.
Down 13-1, Mami Selemani (So., Iowa City, Iowa, Business Management) pushed some momentum to WPU’s side as she dominated Liannette Ortiz in a 12-0 technical fall at 123 pounds.
155-pounder Toyia Griffin (Fr., Nashua, Iowa, Nursing) also fought Gianmarie Santiago Ayala well in a 14-6 setback, while Samantha Ruano (Fr., Romeoville, Ill., Business Management) was handed a heart-breaking loss by criteria to Sofia Rubio at 191 pounds. Ruano recorded a pair of takedowns in the 4-4 bout, but Rubio posted the final takedown which earned her the victory.
Next Up: William Penn is off until after the holiday break, traveling to Fremont, Neb. on January 14 to face Midland in a non-conference dual meet at 6:30 p.m.
