WPU Takes First Dual of Season Over Waldorf
Forest City–Headlined by three falls and a pair of forfeits, the Statesmen men’s wrestling team defeated Waldorf 39-11 in a Heart of America Athletic Conference dual meet Tuesday.
William Penn (1-0, 1-0 Heart) won five of the eight contested bouts, including three by fall, as it closed out the night with 30 unanswered points.
Nadhelo Charles-Pierre (Sr., Miramar, Fla., Sports Management) got the visitors on the board first by slipping past Freddy Moreno 7-6 at 125 pounds.
Unfortunately, the Warriors (0-1, 0-1 Heart) claimed the next two matches by major decision to go ahead 8-3.
149-pounder Cameron Hargrove (Fr., Bolingbrook, Ill., Undecided) answered back, however, with a first-period fall over Mikey Ornelas to briefly give the navy and gold the advantage at 9-8, but Waldorf picked up a come-from-behind victory at 157 pounds for its second and final lead of the evening.
Matheson Meade (Fr., Knoxville, Tenn., Exercise Science) put WPU on top for good with a pin versus Jackson Prescott at 165 pounds. It was the start of five-straight bouts that went in favor of the Statesmen, including a forfeit for Marco Guzman (So., Miami, Fla., Business Management) at 174 pounds.
Makail Stanley (Fr., Orena, Ill., Biology) then pinned Cristian Martinez at 184 pounds before Jesse Schwery (Fr., Panama, Iowa) received a forfeit at 197 pounds.
Branson Bottorff (So., Mackinaw, Ill., Mechanical Engineering) wrapped up a successful opening dual as he won by fall over Donte Wood at 285 pounds.
“Overall, this was a great performance for our guys on a fun night,” Head Coach Aron Scott said. “They fought hard and came up big with bonus-point victories. We have a few things to work on and improve before Saturday, but I am excited for them to compete again.”
