Record Gives Newby First Award

Oskaloosa–Shaniah Newby (So., Twentynine Palms, Calif., Nursing) arguably had the best sprinting day in school history last weekend, and for her efforts she earned Heart of America Athletic Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honors Monday.

Newby won her first career weekly laurel after nearly breaking two program records last Saturday at the Grand View Invitational.

The sophomore did indeed snap one mark as she won the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.27 seconds. That bettered the old school record of 25.60 by Deshay Addison from 1985. She currently ranks first in the Heart in the 200 and is 30th in the NAIA.

Newby also won the 100-meter dash event, hitting the line in 12.36 seconds, which is just .12 off the school record of 12.24 by Renee Addison (1985). Her performance ranks second all-time at WPU, is second in the Heart this year, and 34th in the nation.

The award is the first for WPU this season.
