Ronald Funk, age 83, of Keomah Village, went to join his Heavenly Father on Friday, April 10, 2020 at the MHP Serenity Hospice House in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was born on June 9, 1936 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of John Earl and Dorothy (Henderson) Funk.
Ron attended East High School in Des Moines and graduated with the Class of 1955. At 17 years old, he served his country in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve since 1954. He later attended Iowa State University and took classes for Mid-American Energy.
On December 23, 1961, he was united in marriage to Janice Cowart at the University Christian Church in Des Moines.
Ron started working for Iowa Power (now Mid-American Energy) in 1959 in Des Moines. He and Janice moved to Oskaloosa in 1968 and he continued working for Mid-American until retiring in 2009 after 39 ½ years of employment.
Ron was baptized at the Church of Christ. He was a long-time member of the Elks Club in Oskaloosa. He enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles, lifting weights and staying in shape, corvettes and working in the yard. He also took pride in detailing and working on his cars. Ron was always willing to help out others with whatever they needed. Above all else, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Ron’s family includes his wife of 58 years, Janice Funk of Keomah Village; his brother-in-laws, Jerry (& Maria) Cowart of Tucson, AZ and Arthur D. (& Kathy Crees) Thompson of Waukee; his sisters-in-law, Sharon Kaye Judson of Des Moines and Cheryl Jean (& Ron) Turner of Ankeny, his many-many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by several close friends in Oskaloosa and his cat, Buddy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dorothy Funk; his mother and father-in-law, Evelyn Thompson and Joe Thomas Cowart; a brother in law, Derald Judson; his sister-in-law, Loretta Cowart; and a nephew, Brett Cowart.
Due to the restrictions put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, a private family graveside service will be held at Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
A celebration of Ron’s life will be held at later date.
The recorded service will also be made available through Bates’ YouTube channel for future viewing.
