Statesmen Compete in Grand View Tournament
Des Moines, Iowa—The Statesmen took a break from Heart of America Athletic Conference play to participate in the highly touted Grand View Tournament beginning on Friday and concluding on Saturday.
William Penn (10-16, 5-8 Heart) took on a trio of quality teams in the tournament and came up empty in all three.
WPU 1, HU 3
WPU faced off with Huntington (13-13, 5-6 Crossroads) in the first match of the busy weekend. After a first set where the Statesmen came out victorious 25-22, they were shutout the rest of the way losing the following three sets by the scores of 25-17, 27-25, and 25-22.
The ladies had a chance to take the lead in the match after leading the third set 21-14 but were unable to hang on.
Huntington outhit the navy and gold .229-.188.
Two Statesmen hitters were able to break into double-digits in the kill category with Libby Zorn (Jr., Billings, Mont., History) leading the way with 15 kills. Corrin Lepper (So., Jefferson City, Mo., Exercise Science) also had a nice outing finishing with 10 kills while hitting at a .381 clip.
Annalise Whitcomb (Jr., Humboldt, Kan., Accounting) and Sydney Roush (Jr., Osceola, Wis., Biology) shared setting duties and each tallied 18 assists.
Defensively, Cameryn Campbell (Jr., Jefferson City, Mo., Education) finished with 19 digs to lead the Statesmen in the setback.
WPU 0, JBU 3
The navy and gold returned to the court on Saturday for a pair of matches starting with a matchup against John Brown (17-8). Unfortunately, the Statesmen dropped the match in straight sets, losing 25-18, 25-18, and 25-22.
John Brown outhit William Penn .227-.020 in match where the Statesmen struggled to get the offense going against a stout defense.
Lepper produced a team-high nine kills while Zorn finished right behind her with six. Whitcomb logged 20 assists to lead the team.
On the defensive side, Campbell was the only D.S. to log double-digits with 10 digs while Alicia Jaquez (Jr., Farmington, N.M., Biology) narrowly missed the mark with nine.
WPU 0, VU 3
William Penn finished up the weekend facing off with one of the nation’s best in the #4 ranked Viterbo (22-5). The Statesmen dropped the match in three sets by the scores of 25-13. 25-18, and 25-18.
Viterbo held the navy and gold to a .049 clip while hitting at a .178.
Lepper and Zorn were once again the Statesmen’s significant source of offense combing for 15 kills with eight and seven respectively.
This time it was Macy Bailey (Fr., Bondurant, Iowa, Business Management) who handled a majority of the setting duties tallying 10 assists while Whitcomb trailed her by one with nine assists.
Campbell led her squad on the defensive end with 16 digs, giving her 45 on the weekend.
Next Up: William Penn will resume Heart of America Athletic Conference action on Tuesday with a matchup against Graceland in the Penn Activity Center with the game scheduled to begin at 7 pm.
