WPU Steady in Conference Preview Event

Sunrise Beach, Mo.–Headlined by three individuals in the top 20, the William Penn men’s golf team finished in the top five at the Porto Cima Invitational Monday and Tuesday.

William Penn finished fifth out of 11 teams with a two-day score of 632 (319-313) at The Club at Porto Cima, a par-72 course. Grand View won the event at 606 (301-305) and also had the tournament medalist in Tyler Vaske at even-par 144 (73-71).

The Club at Porto Cima will be the host site of next spring’s Heart of America Athletic Championships and six league schools took advantage of the opportunity to check out the layout, including WPU, GVU, Culver-Stockton, Evangel, Mount Mercy, and Baker.

WPU posted the fourth-lowest score on Tuesday to move up one rung after the opening day of competition.

Oscar Florez Martinez (Jr., Gignon, Spain, Business Management) and Oliver Stanway (Sr., Leicester, England, Sports Management) each finished in a tie for 11th at 154, but took different paths to get there. Florez Martinez carded a 77 in each round, while Stanway struggled to an 81 on Monday, but bounced back with a one-over 73 on Tuesday. His 73 tied for the third-best round of the day.

Spencer Tucker (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) posted a 77 on Monday, but dropped a few strokes on Tuesday down to 80 to finish tied for 19th at 157.

Bruno Nunez (Fr., Spain) tied for 34th at 167 (84-83), while Tony Rocha (Sr., West Branch, Iowa, Business Management) wrapped up the team’s scoring in 56th at 188 (96-92).

Next Up: William Penn travels to Burlington next Monday and Tuesday to co-host the Southeastern CC/William Pen Fall Kickoff. Play will be contested at Spirit Hollow Golf Course.
