Girl Scouts spend time baking for a good cause

OSKALOOSA – The holidays are a great time to spend time in the kitchen baking goodies for friends and family, but why not share with others in your community? That’s what 33 Oskaloosa Girl Scouts did on Sunday to provide a bit of cheer for those working while the rest of us kick back and relax.

Along with 12 adult volunteers, the girls ranging in age from 5 to 12 spent the afternoon baking five different kinds of cookies at the United Methodist Church, followed by packaging them in decorative tins for delivery.

Each troop in attendance chose where their cookies would be delivered, and many mentioned nursing homes, the hospital emergency room, police station and others. Each girl had the opportunity to use cookie cutters, mixers, using measuring equipment and decorate with frosting, sprinkles and even paint brushes.

Girls also began preparing for Girl Scout cookie sales which begin in January by participating in a Cookie College presented by Oskaloosa Cookie Manager Brandi Allen. Cookie sales teach girls the fundamentals of marketing, goal setting, financial management and improve communication skills. The girls also participate in interactive games while learning the basics of good Girl Scout cookie selling.

Cookie sales in Oskaloosa will be held from January 7-30, 2011.
