YMCA Basketball Tournament A Throwback To Years Past
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The sun was hot, but the competition was even hotter as nearly 20 teams squared off at the YMCA’s 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Oskaloosa Saturday.
Eric Christensen, Director of the Mahaska County YMCA, watched as the youth took to the court to find out who was going to be the winner of the reconstituted tournament.
The youth tournament used to be hosted by the Oskaloosa Police Department Christensen believes, “so we got the idea from them.”
“We’re just trying to resurrect that and make it an annual Y event,” Christensen added. “We’ve got a good turnout today. I think we’ve 16 or 17 teams and it’s a good start for us. Hopefully, it will grow over the years to come.”
The tournament is an example of how the Y is reaching outside its building, back into the community. Christensen says that has been intentional on their end. “You hopefully will see us more outside of Oskaloosa, doing programs actually in other communities.”
Even as planning continues for a new YMCA facility, the current facility is still offering services to the community. Christensen said that the Y has opportunities for those ranging from daycare to seniors. “We try to do things for all.”
