Yang Tops All NAIA Golfers for Weekly Award

Maggie Yang

Oskaloosa–Maggie Yang (Fr., Chino, Calif., Diamond Bar HS) capped off an unforgettable week by receiving NAIA National Women’s Golfer of the Week honors today.

The freshman is the first Lady Statesmen golfer to ever earn the award. She is also the first student-athlete from William Penn to collect it since three individuals (Sheila Mercado in volleyball, Steph Christner in softball, and Danny Lund in men’s basketball) did so during the 2005 calendar year.

Yang shot a school-record 151 (76-75) to win medalist laurels by ten strokes at the Iowa Intercollegiate Championships last Saturday and Sunday. The freshman’s 75 on Sunday also broke the program’s 18-hole mark.

Her teammates followed that lead, giving the navy and gold its third-straight tournament crown as it beat the next-closest squad by 71 strokes.

Yang topped all players in par-4 (+3, 4.19 avg.) and par-5 scoring (E, 5.00 avg.) and was second in the event in par-3 scoring (+4, 3.40 avg.). She recorded a field-best four birdies and was second with 23 pars.

With her performance, Yang now holds a 79.7 scoring average over 14 rounds. She has been in the 70s seven times and has placed in the top ten in six of seven tourneys (five top fives).
