Oskaloosa–The Statesmen volleyball team did not go down easily despite being swept by #19 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) 3-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Friday.

William Penn (6-19, 1-7 Heart) fell by scores of 26-28, 16-25, 21-25.

The home team played one its best sets of the year to open the evening. WPU held three-point advantages on several occasions, including 23-20, but the Pioneers (19-8, 8-0 Heart) answered with three straight points. The navy and gold fought back to reach set point at 26-25, but MNU was stout at the end with the final three points of the set.

Having possibly spent much of its energy in an effort to win the opening set, WPU could not keep pace in the second and third races to 25.

Outhit .229-.069, William Penn was led offensively by Savanna Hartman (Jr., Morgan Hill, Calif., Psychology) who had 10 kills. Claire Simmons (Fr., Williamsburg, Iowa, Psychology) and Shawni Wills (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) (.375 attack pct.) added seven winners each.

Setter Leyra Jusino (Sr., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) recorded 27 assists, while Simmons served up two aces. Danielle Breeher (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., Biology) finished with 17 digs as well.

Next Up: William Penn remains in Oskaloosa Saturday to host Graceland in Heart play at 2 p.m.
