WPU Runs at Night in South Dakota
Sioux Falls, S.D.–The Statesmen cross country teams continued their campaign under the lights Friday at the Augustana Twilight.
Numerous NCAA Division I and II programs headlined the fields as the William Penn men were 24th out of 26 teams with 736 points. Nebraska took the crown with 69 points.
On the women’s side, WPU was 23rd out of 25 squads with 694 points; South Dakota claimed the title with 40 points.
Dais Malebana of Cloud County CC won the individual title in the men’s four-mile run in 18:54.46, while Abby Ripperda of South Dakota was first to cross the line in the women’s 5K competition, doing so in 16:47.07, just .07 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Vernon Trozzi (Fr., Hesperia, Calif., Exercise Science) topped the navy and gold men as he was 91st out of 321 runners in a time of 20:47.59.
William De Jesus (Fr., Homestead, Fla., Biology) was second on the team in 247th place (23:03.14), while the time of 23:16.01 by Kenneth Bolton III (So., South Riding, Va.) was good enough for 255th.
Axel Vazquez (Fr., Wray, Colo.) was 258th in 23:25.03 and Terry Jackson (Sr., Houston, Alaska, Biology) was 260th in 23:26.82 to round out the team scoring.
Jack Miller (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa) (289th, 24:59.15) and Julian Davis (Jr., Palmer, Alaska, Mechanical Engineering) (290th, 25:02.30) led the rest of the Statesmen on the course.
Michaela Kmiec (Fr., Centerville, Texas, Exercise Science) guided the Statesmen women, placing 214th (306 total) in a time of 21:37.97.
Talaysia Douver (So., Lakewood, Calif.) was just a few seconds (21:49.19) and a few places (222nd) behind her teammate, while Ashlee Johnson (Fr., Marshalltown, Iowa, Sociology) (229th, 22:03.38) and Zena Cohuo (So., Carrollton, Texas, Exercise Science) (231st, 22:05.72) were also grouped in William Penn’s front pack.
Madison Udy (So., American Falls, Idaho, Exercise Science) wrapped up the team scoring in 261st place (22:55.31).
Next Up: William Penn will travel to Des Moines next Friday to compete in the Grand View Invitational.
