WPU Places Fourth in Indiana

Kendallville, Ind.–The Statesmen men’s golf team left the state for the first time this fall, and unfortunately saw its winning streak end as it competed at the Saint Francis Cougars Invitational Monday and Tuesday.

William Penn, which had won its first two tournaments of the year, finished fourth out of six teams with a two-day score of 638 (326-312) at the par-71 Noble Hawk Golf Links. Taylor (Ind.) won the event at 587 (298-289) with the Trojans’ Noah Ross leading the 35-player field at one-under 141 (71-70).

Windy conditions plagued the golfers on Monday, including hampering the score of Spencer Tucker (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management). For the first time this fall, Tucker shot over par at 75. With more favorable weather on Tuesday, he shaved several strokes off of his scorecard with a two-under 69 to finish in a tie for third at 144. He produced three birdies on Tuesday and did not suffer a bogey until the final hole of the day.

“Spencer had another great tournament,” Head Coach Elise Warne said. “He had a great round under par despite tough conditions. He has been performing well, but I am most impressed with his leadership within the team.”

Bailey Johnston (So., Hastings, Minn., Business Management) was consistent with a pair of 79s to tie for 12th at 158, while Austin Hafner (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management) was next as he dropped three strokes from an opening 84 to a closing 81 (final score of 165, tied for 22nd).

Cameron Johnson (Sr., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Business Management), who tied for 28th at 173 (90-83), and Jonathan Jarvis (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Business Management), who took 30th at 175 (88-87), also helped comprise the team score.

“We struggled with the weather on the first day,” Warne said. “The course was really set up, but we could not take advantage with the wind and the rain. With the wind holding off a bit, we were able to make some shots in the second round. This tournament was a good test for us and we are looking forward to taking what we have learned to Missouri next week.”

Next Up: William Penn travels Columbia, Mo. next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Columbia Cougar Classic.
