Las Vegas, Nev.–The Statesmen women’s bowling team had a top-half finish, but came up a bit short of qualifying for bracket play at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational Monday and Tuesday.

William Penn placed 11th out of 22 teams with 7,629 pins in nine regular games. The squad finished 239 pins out of eighth place, which would have qualified the navy and gold for bracket play.

Wichita State (Kan.) led qualifying with 8,857 pins, but #6 seed St. Francis (Ill.) claimed some upsets en route to taking the bracket tournament crown.

Sydney Brummett of Wichita State led the 144-person field with a 209.1 average, while Bailey Palmer (So., Ottumwa, Iowa, Undecided) topped the Statesmen in 16th place at 184.8.

Amber Ovel (Jr., Waterloo, Iowa, Business Management), at 173.2, and Kayla Gifford (So., Camanche, Iowa, Biology), at 170.3, joined Palmer by also rolling all nine games.

Nicole Craft (So., Wakefield, Neb., Physical Education) managed the best WPU average at 192.6 in five games; Kaylee Gerken (Jr., Dubuque, Iowa, Elementary Education) also started five rounds with a 159.6 clip.

Audra Farley (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Education) posted a 149.3 average in four games, while Abbey Fangman (Fr., Waterloo, Iowa, Elementary Education) (135.0) and Nicole Mottier (Fr., Madison, Wis., Computer Science) (123.0) each started two rounds.

Next Up: William Penn remains in Las Vegas Wednesday and Thursday to compete in the Las Vegas Collegiate Shoot-Out.
