Waverly–The Statesmen indoor track and field teams returned to action Friday with several strong performances at the Wartburg Relays.

Cornelius McCastle (Fr., McKinney, Texas) had arguably the best day with a third-place high jump of 6-6. The mark was within an inch of both the school record and a national-qualifying mark.

Chris Gossett (Fr., Park Forest, Ill.) also took bronze in the triple jump at 42-7, while Joshua Rankin (Fr., University Park, Ill.) was fourth in the event at 42-4.

William Penn posted two athletes with a pair of top-ten finishes in the throws. Derek Seddon (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) was third in the weight throw at 47-8 and fifth in the shot put at 46-4, while Kalob Gist (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) placed sixth in the shot (44-6.75) and ninth in the weight throw (39-0).

Elnimair Barakat (So., Aurora, Ill., Mechanical Engineering), who was seventh in the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.35 seconds, and Markenson Charles (Fr., Lehigh Acres, Fla., Mechanical Engineering), who was ninth in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.62 seconds, also managed top-ten times.

Silver came to William Penn in three relays as well. The 4×200-meter squad crossed the line in 1:37.24, while the 4×400-meter team ran its race in 3:27.94. The distance medley squad was second in 11:57.59.

Meaghan Foster (So., Centerville, Iowa, Undecided) paced the women’s effort with two high finishes in the throws. She was second in the weight throw at 51-1 and third in the shot put at 39-11.25.

Alora Simmons (So., Newton, Iowa, Elementary Education) placed third as well, doing so in the high jump at 4-9.75.

Tamara Weltch (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Human Services/Sociology) gave WPU two top-ten individuals in the weight throw as she was ninth at 38-4.

WPU was fourth in both the 4×200-meter relay (1:56.70) and the 1,600-meter sprint medley (4:44.25).

Next: William Penn will take a week off before getting back in action at two meets on January 24. Some team members will travel to Ames for the Iowa State Open, while others will go to Pella for the Central Dutch Athletics Classic.
