Portsmouth, Ohio–Five players in double figures was more than enough for the Statesmen men’s basketball team to stay perfect as it dropped Shawnee State 94-86 in non-conference action Sunday.

#3 William Penn (3-0) outshot the Bears (0-1) by a 47.9%-36.6% tally to win its third game in three days.

The navy and gold struggled from the line (52.9%) and from behind the arc (21.4%), but hit 64.4% of their two-point attempts. They led 9-4 early, but the hosts rallied to take their first advantage at 13-11. Down one at 15-14, WPU took control with 10 of the next 12 points and never trailed again.

The visitors held a 51-35 margin at the break and extended it to a game-high 22 points at 80-58 with 6:58 to go. SSU tried to make it interesting late, getting within nine with 1:52 to go, but the Statesmen were able to ice the game with six consecutive made free throws.

Two individuals posted double-doubles in the victory, led by Dominique Shaw (Sr., Lufkin, Texas, Wellness and Recreation) with a team-high 23 points (10-for-19 FG) and 10 rebounds. The senior also stole the ball three times.

JC Washington (Sr., Houston, Texas, Sociology) joined Shaw in the double-double club with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Terrell Thompson (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind., Wellness and Recreation) did not end up in the same group as his teammates, but was close to something even better with a near triple-double of 14 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

Mikeal Donaldson (Sr., Columbia, S.C.), with 16 points, and Jovontae Carleton (Jr., El Cerrito, Calif., Sociology), with 14, reached double digits as well, while Corbin Medley (Sr., Rogersville, Mo., General Accounting) and Marquis Todd (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Wellness and Recreation) both contributed five points Sunday.

WPU, which outrebounded Shawnee State 50-45, had to overcome four more turnovers (16-12) than the home team.
