Oskaloosa–The Statesmen women’s soccer team could not come away with a momentum-building Senior Night victory, falling 2-0 to Missouri Valley in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Saturday.

In a game that meant nothing to William Penn (6-10-1, 4-7-1 Heart) in regards to league standings, the home team was outshot 15-7 in its regular season finale. The Statesmen will now be the #9 seed for the Heart Tournament, drawing eighth-seeded Grand View in the play-in round next Tuesday in Des Moines (time TBD). The two programs tied 1-1 on September 28 in Oskaloosa.

William Penn and Missouri Valley played even through the first 45 minutes of action Saturday. The Vikings (10-5-2, 7-3-2 Heart) then finally broke the tie at the 50:08 mark when a Statesmen defender was unsuccessful in her attempt to clear out a shot at the goal and it went into the netting for an own goal.

MVC then added an insurance goal in the 84th to ice the victory.

AnnaMarie Urps (Sr., Wilton, Calif., Exercise Science) guided the offense with two shots, while fellow senior Adriana Borjon (Sr., Willits, Calif., Exercise Science), one of five recognized before the game, recorded six saves.

“We gave a good account of ourselves again tonight against another tough opponent in the Heart, but sadly walked away with a tough loss,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “I want to thank the crowd we had come out tonight to support our seniors and team as we played our last home game of the season. It created a good atmosphere and spurred us on a little as we got tired.”
