WPU Blanks Fighting Bees
Oskaloosa–The Statesmen men’s soccer team returned to the win column Saturday with a convincing 3-0 non-conference win over St. Ambrose.
William Penn (3-2) dominated possession for much of the afternoon, peppering the Fighting Bees’ goal to the tune of a 28-2 advantage in shots (15-2 edge in shots on goal).
The hosts needed just five and a half minutes to break through as Kenedy Deviska (So., Pignon, Haiti, Wellness and Recreation) scored off a pass from Ethan Martinez (Fr., Kansas City, Kan., Business Management).
WPU had 14 first-half attempts, but came up empty on the rest of them, clinging to a 1-0 margin at halftime. Deviska, who paced the navy and gold with 10 shots, finally collected another goal, slipping home a ball from Amgad Hassan (Sr., Falls Church, Va., Computer Science) at the 67:07 mark.
A pair of newbies finished off William Penn’s scoring in the 77th minute as Noel Acevedo (Jr., Hanford, Calif., Industrial Technology) assisted on a goal by Lukas Koch (Fr., Moers, Germany, Undecided).
After being winless during a four-game streak in the early 2010s, the Statesmen have controlled the most recent action in the head-to-head series with four consecutive wins.
“It was good to bounce back today,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “We controlled the game from start to finish and the scoreline reflected a solid performance. We head into conference play now full of optimism and with the belief we can have a good season. We will watch the game film and improve before the Culver-Stockton game. Culver-Stockton has become a local rivalry and we are looking forward to a good account of ourselves on Wednesday.”
Next Up: William Penn remains in Oskaloosa next Wednesday to host Culver-Stockton in a Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup at 7:30 p.m.
