WPU 61st in Final Director’s Cup Standings

Oskaloosa–The women’s golf and softball programs helped maintain William Penn’s elevated national position as the final Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings were released recently.

The Statesmen finished with 230 points, including 70 in the spring, to place 61st in the NAIA. A total of 189 NAIA institutions scored points this year, while nearly 300 schools comprise the division.

The finish ties last year’s placing (245.5 points last year) as the second-best ever, behind a record-high 54th in 2003-2004 (261 points).

WPU gathered 45 points from a 15th-place nationals finish by the women’s golf team, while the softball squad tallied 25 points for its national tournament appearance.

During the winter, the men’s basketball (70 points), wrestling (51.5 points), and men’s indoor track and field team teams (38.5 points) all recorded points for the navy and gold.

Oklahoma Baptist defended its Cup title with 907.5 points, highlighted by national titles in men’s and women’s swimming, women’s indoor track and field, and women’s outdoor track and field. Oklahoma City placed second with 763.25 points, while Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) (756), Embry-Riddle (Fla.) (748.5), and Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) (741.75) rounded out the top five.

William Penn ranked second among all Midwest Collegiate Conference institutions, while Grand View topped the group in 17th place with 507 points. St. Ambrose was 119th with 105 points, while Viterbo (156th, 57 points) and Mount Mercy (172nd, 27 points) also made it into the standings.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 12 sports-six men’s and women’s.
