William Penn Upended on Senior Night
Oskaloosa–On a blustery evening at Drost Field, the Statesmen women’s soccer team could not send its senior class out on a positive note, falling 3-1 to Grand View in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Saturday.
WPU (2-10, 1-9 Heart) celebrated its four seniors prior to the contest, but the rest of the outing belonged to the visiting Vikings (6-4-1, 6-4-1 Heart) who opening the scoring in the 11th minute.
The navy and gold were outshot 12-0 in the first 45 minutes, but only permitted the one goal as they faced a strong southerly wind.
With the gusts to William Penn’s back, things evened up in the second half in regards to shots (8-7 in favor of GVU). Unfortunately, the Vikings were still more productive and managed to put the game on ice with tallies in the 81st and 87th minutes.
Kaitlin Falaney (So., Ottawa, Ill., Sports Management) finally got her squad on the board, doing so with 1:09 remaining on a long bomb from 30 yards out off a pass from Taylor Witthauer (Fr., Vancouver, Wash., Nursing). The goal is Falaney’s team-leading third of the year, while Witthauer now has two assists this fall.
It was too little and too late for the hosts as they closed out their 2020 home slate with the setback. WPU was outshot 20-7 overall with Witthauer tallying three tries.
Katja Bierman (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo., Digital Communication) recorded five saves, while Danielle Gundling (Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif., Elementary Education) entered late and stopped two more Grand View attempts.
Next Up: William Penn travels to Cedar Rapids Tuesday to face Mount Mercy in a rescheduled Heart matchup at 5:30 p.m.
