Oskaloosa— After getting off to a rough start, Penn defeated AIB 67-65 in non-conference women’s basketball action Tuesday.
The visitor squad led the entire first stanza, holding a 37-23 edge at the break, but William Penn fought back after intermission to tie the game 49-49 with eight minutes left. Both teams paced each other until the end. The Lady Statesmen pushed the margin to five before the Eagles were able to sneak within two in the final seconds. Christa Subbert (Sr., Stanton, Stanton HS), who led the team with a double-double had 26 points (6-of-12 FG), was 3-4 from the three point line and went to the line three times (5-6). Subbert also contributed 11 rebounds, three blocks and four assists on the night.
Penn outshot Graceland 40.4%-35.8% and held a 38-35 edge on the boards, led by Subbert’s 11. Orielle Thomas (Fr., Waynesville, Mo., Waynesville HS) added 10 defensive rebounds and was 2-3 from the line. Samantha Darley (Sr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa CC) added 17 points followed by a Kim Thompson (Fr., Park Forest, Ill., Upper Iowa) with 11 points. Four different players had two assists, while Thomas paced the hosts with three steals. Penn overcame a 19-15 deficit in turnovers by performing much better at the charity stripe (18-of-24, while AIB was 22-of-31). Next: Penn travels to Ashford this weekend to compete in a conference match-up at 1 p.m.
