Rangel Leading Statesmen Bowlers to High Ranking
Oskaloosa–Sean Rangel (So., Omaha, Neb., Bellevue East HS) is one of the nation’s best bowlers and is helping the Penn men to a similar status as the regular season is winding down.
Penn is ranked 31st on the collegebowling.com website with 1,652 points derived from a complicated equation. There are 150 institutions included in the ranking. The top 48 teams in the ranking will receive invitations to the USBC national sectionals in March.
Rangel tops the Statesmen in the individuals rankings at #10 with a 209.6 average over 48 games. He has finished in the top ten three times this season, including taking runner-up honors at the Leatherneck Classic in December.
Drew Balta (Fr., Walford, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) and Cameron Foster (Fr., West Jordan, Utah, West Jordan HS) have also been solid in their first collegiate campaigns. Balta is ranked 129th with a 192.8 average (46 games), while Foster owns a 191.9 clip over 48 games.
A total of eight Statesmen average over 190 pins per game this year.
Andrew Zaug (So., Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) has posted the best single game in 2010-2011 with a school-record 276 in the Minnesota Invitational in November, while his average of 235.2 at that tournament is also a squad high.
Women Bowlers 22nd Nationally
Oskaloosa–The Lady Statesmen bowling team is putting up big numbers in just its second year of existence.
Penn is ranked 22nd on the collegebowling.com website with 1,294 points derived from a complicated equation. There are 90 institutions included in the ranking. The top 48 teams in the ranking will receive invitations to the USBC national sectionals in March. The Lady Statesmen qualified in last year’s inaugural season, placing seventh out of 15 teams.
Breanne Underwood (Sr., Treynor, Treynor HS) paces the Lady Statesmen as she is ranked 116th in the nation. The senior is currently averaging 179.1 pins over 41 games.
Samantha Powell (So., Herriman, Utah, Bingham HS), with a 177.8 clip (41 games), and Amanda Kilts (Fr., Cedar Rapids, Cedar Rapids Jefferson HS), with a 174.7 average (35 games), are also performing well this winter. Powell is not far behind Underwood in 134th position, while Kilts is also a top 200 bowler in the 190th spot.
Kilts has had the single best game thus far by rolling a 254 in the Warhawk Open in November, while Powell’s 199.0 average at the National Collegiate Team Match Games later that month was a squad high.
