Wayne Hasselman
Oskaloosa. Wayne Glen Hasselman, 67, of Oskaloosa, died Friday, August 5, 2011, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. Wayne was born September 28, 1943, at Oskaloosa, the son of Gerrit and Wilma Van Haaften Hasselman. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1961, and served as president of the FFA while in high school. He furthered his education by taking two years of college classes. Wayne was a farmer his entire life, and following school he stayed on the family farm, which he purchased in the late 1960’s. In the early 1970’s, he purchased the Harry Dussenberry farm, and continued to farm both farms until ill health forced his retirement in the late 1990’s. He worked nights at Vermeer Manufacturing for a short time in the 1980’s. On February 14, 1980, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Slycord. Wayne adopted Cheryl’s two sons Gary and Curtis Van Hemert. Wayne and Cheryl later divorced. On September 10, 1995, he was united in marriage to Norma Miller at Pella. Early in life Wayne was a very active member of the Ebenezer Reformed Church at Leighton where he was involved with Sunday School, sang in the choir and was a song leader. He was also active in 4-H, serving as a leader. Wayne felt called to volunteer; and truly loved volunteering at Crystal Heights Care Center and Oskaloosa Care Center where he called Bingo for many years. He was involved in World Gospel Missions and traveled with them two times to Honduras. He was a very active member of Cornerstone Church in University Park, Iowa, and was a member of the Farm Bureau.
His family includes his wife, Norma Hasselman of Oskaloosa; two sons: Gary (& Amy) Van Hemert of Ottumwa and Curtis Van Hemert of Oskaloosa; 15 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three step daughters: Kathleen (& Ron) Goldsmith of Hiawatha, Iowa, Karlene (& John) Marks of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, and Karen Miller of Bloomfield, Iowa; four step grandchildren; two sisters: Eleanor Van Gent of Burnett, Wisconsin and Eileen (& Elmer) Hessing of Pella, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and a brother in law: Edward Van Gent.
Funeral services for Wayne Hasselman will be held Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel at Oskaloosa, with Pastor David Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Leighton. Visitation will begin Monday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Monday from 5 – 7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to World Gospel Missions.
