Voight Scores Twice as William Penn Takes First Heart Win

Dubuque–The Statesmen women’s soccer team overcame a sizeable disparity in shot attempts to defeat Clarke 3-1 Heart of America Athletic Conference action Tuesday.
WPU (4-4, 1-3 Heart) was outshot 34-12, but took advantage of its opportunities to claim its first win in league play.
Raunice Butler (Jr., Nassau, Bahamas, Physical Education) put the visitors on the board first, scoring unassisted at the 19:21 mark. The goal is her team-leading fifth of the fall.
The Pride (4-4-1, 1-2 Heart) answered less than five minutes later to tie the score at 1-1; the contest stayed that way into the break.
The shot margin grew for the hosts in the second period, but Mariah Voight (Jr., La Mesa, Calif., Sociology/Psychology) made that a moot stat when she tallied back-to-back goals in the 57th and 65th minutes; both scores were unassisted. Voight now has three goals in 2017.
To say Riley Ludwig (Jr., Big Bear City, Calif., Psychology) had an eventful day between the pipes is a major understatement. Of CU’s 34 shots, 19 were on goal, leading Ludwig to finish with a season-high 18 saves in the victory. The save tally is the highest for a WPU goalkeeper since Ali Parks had 20 on September 28, 2011.
“This was the best performance of the season for us,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “Clarke can be a difficult road game and we handled the situation very well. We worked hard and scored some good goals from set pieces. The challenge is to play like this every game as we move forward.”
Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Saturday to host MidAmerica Nazarene in Heart action at 5 p.m.
