Virginia Frances Striegel, 97, of What Cheer passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney, Iowa. Virginia Francine Striegel was born November 13, 1921 in Keota, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Sophia Klett Haupert.

Virginia was a 1939 graduate of the Keota High School.

On April 28, 1943, she was united in marriage to Myron Francis Striegel and to this union were born seven boys. In 1949 they moved to the What Cheer area. At age 37, Virginia lost her husband in an auto accident.

After the death of her husband, Virginia and her seven sons continued farming and went on to purchase more farm land. She was a strong, independent woman. Virginia always had hot meals for her sons, ironed every article of clothing, and hand stitched over 75 quilts.

Virginia led by example, and her faith was the cornerstone of her life. Virginia believed you could do anything if you could sing. She served on church governing councils for St. Joseph, Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Mary Catholic Church. She was a member of the What Cheer Cheerettes’, the Keokuk County Farm Bureau Women’s Choir, the Keokuk County Farm Bureau Kitchen Band, and she served as song leader for three Catholic Churches throughout her life. Virginia also performed at several weddings and funerals as well as five area nursing homes for 28 years. She was appointed by Governor Robert Ray to serve on the State Soil Conservation Commission, served as Keokuk County Soil Assistant Commissioner for 26 years, and was a member of the Isaac Walton League. Virginia also served as a Keokuk County Health Center Trustee for 19 years, was a board member of Keokuk County Farm Bureau, and the first woman in the State of Iowa to serve as a Farm Bureau Board President. In 1979, she was named a Master Farmer by Wallaces Farmer Magazine.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Myron Striegel; sisters: Gertrude Haupert, Geneva Haupert, Margaret Carroll, Martha Henderson, Louise Linder, Josephine Drish; and a brother, Charles Haupert.

Virginia is survived by her seven sons: Marion (& Marj) Striegel of Oskaloosa, Jim (& Vickie) Striegel of Delta, Charles Striegel of What Cheer, Floyd Striegel of Ojai, CA, Paul (& Judy) Striegel of What Cheer, Phil (& Rita) Striegel of Coralville, and Mike (& Suzette) Striegel of What Cheer. She also leaves behind 23 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

Funeral mass will begin at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer from 4:00 to 8:00 pm,
Rosary service will begin at 4:00 pm.
Burial will be held in the St. Elizabeth Cemetery at Harper.
Memorials may be designated to the What Cheer Opera House, the What Cheer Fair Board or the What Cheer Fire and Rescue.
