Upcoming community events

  • Relay for Life of Mahaska County is scheduled for June 2, 2012, at the City Square in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
  • Central United Methodist Church, corner of A Ave. and N. Market is having an Ice Cream Social on Thursday June 7 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Beefburgers, hot dogs, ice cream, pie, and drinks will be served. Free will offering for missions projects.
  • The Forever Shooting Sports Foundation’s Young Guns Program is holding its first event in Mahaska County on June 9 from 1-5 PM. Pheasants Forever and its partners are working to provide youth and families the opportunity to be introduced to, and enjoy a variety of shooting sports and outdoor skills in a safe and fun environment.
  • The event will be held at the Mahaska County Izaak Walton League and participants need to RSVP by June 6 using the registration form available at www.mahaskacountypheasantsforever.org. Cost for the event is $5.00.
  • Come out to learn about the historic art of rope making at the Nelson Pioneer Farm on Saturday, June 9th from 9 am to 5 pm. Rope makers from throughout the nation will be at the Mahaska County Historical Society’s Farm just north of Oskaloosa. Help the American Ropemaker’s Guild make a 150 foot hay rope. Hands-on activities will also be available in many of the historic buildings. Try your hand at making vinegar, grinding coffee, or milking Lily the cow. For more information call 641-672-2989.
  • The America Legion Riders Post 29 of Washington, Iowa will be hosting a replica of the Vietnam Wall Memorial “The Wall That Heals” June 14th – 17th at the Washington County All Veteran Memorial on Lexington Blvd (next to the Washington County Jail).

On June 13th the Riders will meet the Wall in Richland, IA then travel through Keota, Wellman, Kalona, Riverside, Ainsworth, and
Crawfordsville into Washington where they will set up the Wall. Once the Wall is ready it will be open 24 hours daily to the public. The public is invited to an Opening Ceremony at 7pm on June 14th and Closing Ceremony will be June 17th at 2pm.

  • Tuesday, June 19, 5 to 7:30 pm – Ice Cream Social at Oskaloosa 1st Christian Reformed Church 815 North 11th St. Includes sloppy joes, hot dogs, cupcakes, pie, and HOMEMADE ice cream. A freewill offering will be taken. Come and enjoy an evening of good food and fellowship. Sponsored by Coffee Break.
  • Sunday, July 1 – Independence Day Celebration. 1:00 – 4:00 Mahaksa County Historical Society’s Nelson Pioneer Farm. 2211 Nelson Lane, Oskalosoa. Free admission. Old-time ice cream churning. Children’s games, music and watermelon. For more information: 641-672-2989.
