U.S. and Jordan Celebrate 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations

Washington, D.C., February 17, 2024 — The United States and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan marked a significant milestone today, celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations, a journey that began on February 18, 1949, when Wells Stabler was appointed as the first American Chargé d’Affaires ad interim to Jordan. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken took the occasion to reflect on the enduring partnership that has flourished over the decades between the two nations.

In a statement released by the State Department, Blinken lauded the deep and multifaceted relationship that the United States and Jordan have cultivated since the mid-20th century. He underscored the shared vision of peace, security, and prosperity that has been a hallmark of the bilateral relationship, benefiting not just the two countries but the entire region.

“Over more than seven decades of partnership, our relationship has expanded to advance inclusive economic development, enhance opportunities for women and youth, ensure sustainable access to safe water, and promote commercial ties,” Blinken stated. He further highlighted the significance of security cooperation, regional stability, and humanitarian efforts as cornerstones of the U.S.-Jordan alliance.

The Secretary of State also emphasized the strong bonds between the peoples of the two nations, alongside the leadership, which have been instrumental in the partnership’s success and resilience. The relationship is poised for further growth, with both countries committed to strengthening their strategic partnership.

Looking ahead, the United States remains dedicated to supporting Jordan in its path toward greater prosperity and stability, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II. The celebration of this 75-year milestone is not just a reflection of the past but a beacon for future cooperation, aiming to deepen historic security, economic, and cultural ties even further.

As both nations commemorate this landmark anniversary, the focus remains firmly on a future filled with continued collaboration and shared achievements.
