GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College head football coach Jeff Pedersen ’02 recently announced Tyrone Carter has joined the Pioneers’ coaching staff.

Carter comes to Grinnell from Bethany College in Kansas, where he worked with the offensive line and held the title of video coordinator/academic coordinator. Later he was given the assignment of run game coordinator and assistant head coach.

Prior to that, he worked at East Los Angeles College, where he finished as the offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and assistant head coach. Carter began coaching in the Los Angeles area in 2008, and still has strong recruiting ties in the area.

At Grinnell, Carter will serve as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Pedersen noted his excitement at Carter joining the staff. “We’ve built a lot of momentum for the program over the past year-and-a-half, and adding Tyrone to the staff adds to that energy,” said Pedersen. “He has a strong offensive mind and our guys responded to him immediately. I believe he’ll have a tremendous impact on the program, both on the field and with our recruiting. We’re extremely excited to add him to the Pioneer family.”

Professionally, Carter has worked in the human services industry with at risk youth in home and public settings, youth and adult mental health and substance abuse. He has also worked in the education industry as a sub-teacher on the high school level, as well as adjunct professor at East Los Angeles and full professor of business education at Bethany College.

Carter completed his bachelor’s degree in Human Service Management and master’s from the University of Phoenix. He is currently enrolled at Felician University, taking classes towards a doctorate in business administration.

Carter graduated from Westchester High School, where he was nominated to the All-League, All-Conference and All-Westside Teams and earned Athlete of the Year honors as a senior. While at Westchester, he also earned recognition for heroism in the face of danger from the county of Los Angeles.

He then attended Fresno State University, where he helped the Bulldogs’ football team to the Western Athletic Conference championship in the 1993-94 season.

Carter is married to Elise Carter.
