Two Die in Clinton County House Fire, Two Firefighters Injured

Wheatland, IOWA— At 7:55 a.m. on Tuesday, March 01, 2011, 911 dispatchers received a call that a building at 2329 Memorial Drive was on fire. The building is a farm house that is the primary residence for five people. Three persons were in the building at the time of the fire. One person got out, but two were not able to escape.

The deceased have been identified as 26 year old Taren Burris and her two year old son, Logan Taets. The cause of death will not be determined until autopsies are completed.

Two Wheatland firefighters were injured while fighting the fire, however their injuries are not life-threatening.

The Wheatland Fire Community Department was assisted by the Calamus Fire Department, Grand Mound Fire Department, Lowden Fire Department and the Lost Nation Fire Department. Wheatland, DeWitt and Clarence Ambulance in addition to Lowden First Responders were also at the scene. Medforce Helicopter Ambulance was also used.

The investigation is being conducted by the State Fire Marshal Division, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, and Clinton County Emergency Management. The Clinton and Scott County Medical Examiner’s Offices are also involved in the investigation.
