Turnovers Doom William Penn Against Concordia (Neb.)
Mitchell, S.D.–A tough trip to The Mount Rushmore State for the Statesmen women’s basketball team wrapped up Saturday with a 92-42 loss to No. 10 Concordia (Neb.).
WPU (0-2) was smothered by a Bulldog defense that forced it into 40 turnovers (16 for CUNE), leading to a 50-6 deficit in points off turnovers.
The navy and gold, who unfortunately trailed all afternoon, were down 29-8 after 10 minutes on the hardwood. The day did not get any better for the Statesmen, who were outshot 41.0%-35.7% and outrebounded 45-27.
Laney Parker (Sr., Springfield, Ill., Business Management) topped William Penn with 13 points and three assists.
Reagan Pavesi (Sr., Austin, Texas, Wellness and Recreation), with 12 points, and Aliya Wagamon (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Psychology), with 10, also reached double figures.
Chudear Mach (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa, Kinesiology) topped the rebounding efforts with six boards.
“Our ladies fought hard, but fell short to a well-coached and talented squad today,” Head Coach Dewitt Mandley said. “Like yesterday, this is an opportunity to learn from another top-10 program that plays 40 minutes of constant pressure and intensity.”
“When we let our game come to us, we are fine and can get the shots we want,” Mandley added. “Unfortunately, when we speed up, we get the results like today. I have to a better job in preparing us to deal with pressure. We will watch film and look to get better for our next game.”
Next Up: William Penn travels to Omaha, Neb. next Friday to face Ottawa (Ariz.) in the College of Saint Mary Classic at 5 p.m.
