Three Homer as WPU Splits at Peru State

William Penn University Athletics

Peru, Neb.–The William Penn baseball team failed to get timely hits in the first game, but answered with some long-range attacks in the second contest to split a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader with Peru State Friday.

WPU (18-21, 7-15 Heart) lost the opener 4-3, but won the nightcap 11-8. The teams will conclude their four-game series Saturday with another doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.

The Bobcats (22-12, 12-6 Heart) struck first in the first game, leading 3-0 after four innings.

The Statesmen produced a lot of baserunners, but finally got their first runs on the board in the fifth, beginning with three consecutive singles. Julian Villegas (Jr., Wilmington, Calif., Sociology) made it 3-1 as he singled in pinchrunner Rudy Saenz (Fr., El Paso, Texas, Exercise Science), and another one-bagger by Cory Russell (Sr., El Cajon, Calif., Education) trimmed the deficit to 3-2 when Jeysen Delgado (Jr., Harbor City, Calif., Kinesiology) touched home plate. Unfortunately, with the bases loaded and just one out, WPU failed to bring in any more runs.

PSC added an insurance run in the home half of the fifth, but the navy and gold got that run back with a score in the sixth as Villegas’ double scored pinchrunner Nick Worcester (Fr., Bloomingdale, Ill., Physical Education).

William Penn put a runner in scoring position in the seventh as well, but could not finish the comeback. WPU left runners in scoring position in every frame but the third.

In a game that saw both teams post nine base knocks, Villegas led the way with three hits and two RBIs. Jared Goodman (Jr., Huntington Beach, Calif., Physical Education) added two hits (one walk), while Dominik Sawyer (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Psychology and Human Services) (one hit, one walk) and Colton Johnson (Sr., Westminster, Calif., Physical Education) (two walks) both also reached the pads twice.

Nick Seipel (Jr., Rosemont, Minn., Software Engineering) struck out three against one walk in a complete-game effort.

William Penn’s hitters once again pounded the ball around the diamond in the nightcap to the tune of a 15-13 edge in hits. The difference, though, in the second contest came in that once on base, those individuals finished their four-base trip.

The visitors could not have asked for a better start as Delgado led off with a solo home run, his third of the year. Goodman added another run later in the inning.

Peru State took the advantage back with four unanswered runs to go up 4-2 after four innings.

Goodman then matched Delgado with his own solo roundtripper (his first) to cut the margin to 4-3 in the fifth, but the team’s real damage was done in the final two innings.

In the sixth, Goodman singled home Delgado and Worcester, while Fabian Gutierrez (Jr., Selah, Wash., Communications) launched a two-run bomb that also plated Goodman. Gutierrez’s homer is his first of 2017.

The Statesmen then put the game away with another four runs in the seventh. Sawyer tapped home plate on a Delgado double, while a Villegas’ double brought in both Delgado and Tyler Raskin (Sr., Vancouver, Wash., Business Management). The afternoon’s scoring was capped when Goodman’s single scored Villegas.

Goodman’s incredible showing included him going 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored; he also walked once.

Delgado joined him in the four-hit club, also scoring three times and driving in two runs. Gutierrez finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Sawyer was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Villegas tallied two RBIs as well.

Starting pitcher D.J. Milam (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Business Management) and reliever Frankie Nunez (Sr., Lemon Grove, Calif., Sociology) did not have tremendous outings, but both produced solid strikeouts numbers; Milam had four and Nunez managed two.
