Thomas, Clay End Careers in National Triple Jump Competition

William Penn University Athletics

Marion, Ind.–Two of the best triple jumpers in William Penn track and field history ended their careers Saturday with one final attempt at collegiate gold at the 2011 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.

Javaras Thomas (Sr., Miami, Fla., Miami Beach HS) and Royce Clay (Sr., Miami, Fla., Booker T. Washington HS) put forth great efforts in the event, but both came up just shy of All-American status.

Thomas, last year’s outdoor national runner-up, placed 12th overall with a mark of 48-4.5, while Clay was 15th at 47-7.75.

Fresno Pacific (Calif.) claimed the top two spots with Ethan Dejongh dethroning defending outdoor national champion Eugene Vollmer with a mark of 51-0.75, only two inches farther than Vollmer.

Thomas leaves the program as the event record holder at 50-11.5, while Clay was a five-time Midwest Collegiate Conference champion in the jumps.
