This Day In Weather History August 28

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

1979: Several tornadoes touched down across Iowa mostly producing minor damage, except for one particularly violent tornado that produced F3 to F4 damage in southwestern portions of the state. This tornado tracked from south of Glenwood, through Tabor, just south of Shenandoah, and to Blanchard striking rural areas but fortunately missing most towns along its 45 mile path. Several dozen farm homes and outbuildings were destroyed, a man was killed when his semi truck was carried 150 yards, and a woman was killed when her house was destroyed with only the step leading to the door remaining on her home site. Another 14 people were injured and several million dollars in damage was assessed.
