Thelma D. Hoover, age 98, of Albia, passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at the Monroe Care Center in Albia. Thelma was born July 24, 1920, in Monroe County, IA, to Elmer E. and Icyl (Repp) Kellogg.
Thelma married James L. Calhoun on November 1, 1941 in Missouri. He passed away in April of 1967. She later married Wilbert Hoover in April of 1977.
Thelma graduated from Georgetown High School in 1937 and then attended Ottumwa Heights College in Ottumwa.
Thelma taught rural school for 6 years. She was elected Clerk of District Court in 1968.
Thelma was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia, transferring from Iconium Methodist after moving to Albia. She was active in the church and was a member of the United Methodist Women, a Sunday school teacher, and participated in many Bible Study groups. She was also a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, the Albia Women’s Club, and the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association. Thelma enjoyed sewing, especially quilts.
Thelma is survived by 3 daughters: Roseann Miller of Laurel Hill, FL, Shirley (& Mike) Moon of Des Moines, IA, and Carol (& Roger) Kendall of Bella Vista, AR; a son, Leon (& Cindy) Calhoun of St. Louis, MO; 2 stepchildren, Bob (& Martha) Hoover of Albia, IA and Susan Voss of Moravia, IA; 9 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 7 step great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; 1 step great-great grandchild; 2 sisters, Ellen (& Tom) Ellis of Grinnell, IA, and Betty Pavlick of Moulton, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Icyl Kellogg; 2 husbands, James Calhoun and Wilbert Hoover; 2 grandsons in infancy, Bryan and Matthew; a step-grandson, Jeff; a brother, Emmanuel “Kelly” Kellogg; 2 sisters, Ollie (& Blair “Buss”) Ragan; and Florence (& Clarence) Bell; a brother-in-law, Andy Pavlick; and a son-in-law, Gary Miller.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2019, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia with Thelma’s family present 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. to meet and greet family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 25, 2019, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia with Pastor Roger Henry officiating.
Burial will follow services at Iconium Cemetery in Iconium, IA.
Memorials have been established to the Iconium Methodist Church, Trinity United Methodist Church or to Monroe Care Center in Albia.
