The Winter Classic Continues At Penn Central Mall
The noon lunch tournament on Friday is a popular time to catch a round of miniture golf inside of Penn Central Mall during the ‘Winter Open’.
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The United Way of Mahaska County hosted their 8th annual winter open, where the halls of Penn Central Mall play host to miniature golf, looking slightly like Pebble Beach Golf Links.
This is the 3rd year that United Way has been running the event, which was started by the YMCA as a fundraiser.
“This weekend, we’re kind of taking a different spin on it,” says Timothy Gibbons, United Way of Mahaska County Executive Director.
This weekend’s golf had a slightly different spin on it than years past. The traditional lunch tournament kick-off took place on Friday, and teams of two took on the challenging course.
The course is built by area businesses who sponsor and then create their own miniature golf hole. It gives the businesses a chance to showcase who they are while interacting with the public.
Prizes for the tournament included gift cards and gift certificates to Edmundson Golf, good whenever winter releases its grip on us.
Something new was the Pub Pub Golf night, for golfers 21 and up that featured No Coast Beer from the brewery right in Oskaloosa. The brews were joined with some music and Breadaux Pizza by the slice.
Saturday was open free play for the community to come out and enjoy for $5 a round per person, with families of 4 or more being just $15 per round of play.
Gibson said that lots of free play coupons were handed out at the Oskaloosa Schools to help encourage kids to swing by for a free round of golf.
A first for the tournament was some door prizes. The Oskaloosa Chamber and Development Group donated some ‘Osky Cash,’ and Mahaska Drug donated a hoverboard to be given away, along with some other prizes for people of all ages.
The money that is made from the hole sponsorships and the rounds of golf goes to help other non-profits in the area.
The final round of golf tee’d off on Saturday evening, and by Monday morning Penn Central Mall will be back to normal.
