Tena M. Van Engelenhoven, age 96, of Oskaloosa, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2020, at the Northern Mahaska Specialty Care Center in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was born on December 14, 1923, in Mahaska County, the daughter of John and Gertrude (Van Dorp) Dahm.
Tena attended country school in Mahaska County through the 8th grade.
On February 16, 1944, she was united in marriage to Albert J. Van Engelenhoven. To this union 2 children were born, Barry and Adonna. Albert passed away in March of 1999.
Tena worked for several restaurants in Oskaloosa as a waitress for many years. She was also a homemaker, taking care of her family and her home.
Tena enjoyed flowers and flower gardening, embroidering, and was a talented seamstress, even sewing many of her children’s clothes while they were growing up. Tena also had an eye for interior decorating. Her real joy in life was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Her family includes her two children, Barry Van Engelenhoven of Oskaloosa and Adonna (& Jim) Ver Meer of Pella; 2 grandchildren, Lesley Cratton and Angela Verschuure; 5 great grandchildren: Ashton, Keagan, and Maranda Verschuure, Cole Gilpin, and Coral Jenkins; 2 great-great grandchildren, Abel Verschuure and Emma Smith. She is also survived by a sister, Wilma DeBruin; and a nephew, Larry DeBruin.
In addition to her husband, Tena was preceded in death by her parents, John and Gertrude Dahm; a granddaughter, Amanda Ver Meer; and a brother, Cornie Dahm.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Following the service, burial will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton.
According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event.
The funeral service will be live streamed at the funeral home’s YouTube Channel for those wishing to support the family from a distance.
Visitation will begin Wednesday after 10 a.m. until service time at 2:00 in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa.
Memorials may be made to the Good News Chapel in Oskaloosa.
