The individual responsible for elections in each county is the county auditor. This year’s election is guaranteed to bring about some change in our local Auditors office. CRI’s Jon Hoffmann tells us about one dedicated public servant who is about to call it a career.

The Mahaska County Courthouse is where auditor Kay Swanson has worked for the last 52 years.

32 years as a clerk and 20 years as auditor, but she’s now serving her last term.

“Oh no, I’ve been here long enough,” says Swanson.

Sue Brown has worked under Kay for 18 years and even fills in when Kay had the day off.

“What I will miss most is her experience and just everything that has happened over all of the years that she has been here. Always knows where things are, always knows how it happened years ago, remembers those kind of things,” says Brown.

Sue is running unopposed for auditor this election, so she will likely be taking the reigns as while Kay plans to “do whatever I want to do, when I want to do it.”

She is retiring – tied with Jane Coffey for the longest run as auditor.

Kay says she has seen a lot changes in the office, like adding to computers in 1980.

“We started with the AS400 type thing that was a big monster. It was huge. It was bigger than this desk. There’s been a lot of changes. We’ve got new maps, aerial maps for the real estate, and voter registration is a lot different. It has become computerized and it wasn’t all computerized,” says Swanson.

Kay’s last day will be December 31, 2012.
