Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors met in regular session on Monday, March 18, 2019.

The Supervisors discussed using funds from an account that is split with the sheriff’s office for upgrading security cameras. The account is 60% controlled by the sheriff, while the remaining 40% by the Supervisors for courthouse security related items.

Until there is a need at the jail, Mahaska County Supervisor Mark Groenendyk and Mahaska County Sheriff agreed that it would be a good use for those funds to improve the camera system.

The motion to pay for the cameras using that fund was passed unanimously.

The Supervisors were tasked with appointing a designated point of contact for the new radio system being built and deployed in the county.

“RACOM would like to have an individual that is familiar with the operations of the 911 center,” said Groenendyk, who asked Mahaska County Sheriff Russ Van Renterghem if there would be a person in his office with the expertise to be that point of contact.

Van Renterghem made the recommendation of appointing 911 Administrator Jamey Robinson or EMA Deputy Coordinator Josh Stevens. “It just makes sense to ask Jamey or Josh or both of them. If you’re looking for a recommendation from me, I would recommend Jamey because he can delegate some the duties and so forth to Josh, who has experience in Wapello County with building a radio system. And they have got the radio expertise.”

Mahaska County Supervisor Steve Wanders made a motion to appoint Jamey Robinson as the county’s point of contact with RACOM for the new radio system.

The Supervisors were asked by attorneys representing the Mahaska County 911 Board for a deposition on information they may know about the board dating back to the formation of the original agreements..

“To me, this is a matter of law, this isn’t about opinion,” said Groenendyk of the list of proposed questions for the deposition. “I’m not sure of the relevance of all this, but they want it, so they are entitled to it.”

Groenendyk offered to be the Supervisor deposed by the legal team, since he sits on the board, and the motion to appoint Groenendyk was passed unanimously.

The Supervisors also heard from Pathfinders, Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group.

The next scheduled supervisors meeting is scheduled for April 1, 2019 beginning at 9 am in the 3rd Floor Conference room at the Mahaska County Courthouse.
