Supervisors Approve 5.5 Million Dollar Bond Measure

Oskaloosa, Iowa – On Wednesday the Mahaska County Supervisors opened a public hearing to move forward on the bonding process for a communications system not to exceed 5.5 million dollars.

There was no public at the meeting or in writing that were submitted, and the public hearing was closed.

The measure to bond for the communications system passed unanimously with Groenendyk, Wanders and Parker voting in favor of bonding for the project.

The Supervisors delayed the signing of the contract with Raycom for the new communications system until the contract was reviewed by the new Mahaska County Attorney Andrew Ritland, and consultant Rey Freeman.

In the organizational part of the meeting, it was moved and approved to appoint Mark Groenendyk as the Mahaska County Supervisors Board Chairman, while Steve Wanders will be the Vice-Chair.

The meeting days and time will remain unchanged as previous years, with the Board meeting on the first and third Mondays of the month, at 9 am.

Also approved was naming the official depositories, record retention, and committees were named, with the only change being to move Steve Wanders to the Oskaloosa Chamber of Commerce committee.

Sue Brown and the Supervisors were named as custodians of the Mahaska County Courthouse.

Ben Hoskinson was reappointed as Mahaska County Weed Commissioner.

Mahaska County Attorney Andrew Ritland was appointed as HIPPA Privacy Officer, along with Darrin Hite, IT Coordinator, as well.

Approved was payroll changes for the Mahaska County Treasurer’s Office and the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office.

The board approved Resolution #2019-05 to authorize the county engineer to execute and accept plans in connection with Farm-to-Market and Federal and State aid construction projects.

Accepted the 2nd quarter report for the Mahaska County Auditor.

The Board tabled Resolution #2019-04 to provide financial support of Regional Planning Affiliation until their representative Chris Bowers can be in attendance.

Appointment to the Pioneer Cemetery Commission was tabled until further details were made available.

The Supervisors tabled a recommendation from the Mahaska County Compensation Board to increase the sheriff’s wages by 8%, county attorney by 6%, and all other elected officials by 3%.
