‘Stuff the Bus’

It’s almost time to Stuff the Bus! – Those familiar “yellow school bus” boxes will start disappearing from donation sites this week, but if you miss them don’t worry, you can still donate to Operation Backpack! On Friday, July 31st, all donation boxes will make their way to the North Hy-Vee parking lot, where community members will have one last chance to donate supplies for Operation Backpack. The bus will be in the parking lot from 11am -1pm. Donating is quick and easy – come visit us on your lunch break! As the donation boxes are filled, they will be used to literally stuff the bus!

In the weeks after Stuff the Bus, United Way, SIEDA, and Salvation Army volunteers will use the supplies to start putting backpacks together. In the past three years volunteers have put together and handed out around a thousand backpacks to needy students in the Oskaloosa area! These bags ensure the students are prepared and confident for the school year, and help them get more out of their education.

Operation Backpack Applications are also due July 31st. If you haven’t picked one up yet, visit the United Way office at 500 High Avenue West in Oskaloosa. Applications should be turned into SIEDA at 114 North Market Street in Oskaloosa on time to ensure your student gets a backpack. After all applications are processed, applicants will be contacted with a pick-up date and time. This year’s pickup dates will be August 17th-19th.

These events are only successful with the support of the entire community. Whether it’s donating or volunteering, both Operation Backpack and Stuff the Bus are great opportunities to make an impact in your Oskaloosa community. If you would like to help in preparing Oskaloosa students for school this year, or for information on Operation Backpack and Stuff the Bus, contact the United Way of Mahaska County at (641).673.6043 or by email at uwmc.coordinator@gmail.com.
