Strong Defensive Effort Leads WPU to Victory
Oskaloosa—Statesmen women’s volleyball returned to their home court in the Penn Activity Center for the second consecutive day as they hosted Missouri Valley College.
William Penn (7-9, 2-5 Heart) responded with a huge victory over the Vikings (0-18, 0-5 Heart) in straight sets by the scores of 27-25, 25-15, and 25-20.
The navy and gold outhit its counterpart .185-.127 in the match led by Libby Zorn (Jr., Billings, Mont., History) who had a 14 kill performance while hitting at a .367 clip. Alyssa Young (Fr., Winter Springs, Fla., Biology) also had a nice outing finishing with eight kills and hitting .400.
After a back-and-forth first set that saw the Statesmen barely edge the Vikings, the ladies took all the momentum in the second, outhitting MVC .235-.121 in the set. The Statesmen put the finishing touches on the sweep in third with Zorn logging five of her 14 kills in the set.
Annalise Whitcomb (Jr., Humboldt, Kan., Accounting) and Sydney Roush (Jr., Osceola, Wis., Biology) both played their part in running the offense combining for 33 assists, finishing with 16 and 17 respectively.
It was a team effort on defense with three Statesmen tallying double-digit digs. Cameryn Campbell (Jr., Jefferson City, Mo., Education) led the squad with 15 digs, Casi Gacusana (Sr., Kea’au, Hawaii, Biology) and Cecily Liphardt (Fr., Lincoln, Neb., Psychology) each finished with 10. Whitcomb also chipped in with nine, narrowly missing a double-double.
Next Up: The Statesmen will get back out on the road as they head down to Graceland on Tuesday, September 24 with the game scheduled to begin at 7 pm in Lamoni.
