Statesmen Upended Twice at National Duals

Cedar Falls–The William Penn women’s wrestling team took on a pair of stiff foes in its first two dual meets of the season and unfortunately fell short both times at the NWCA National Duals Friday.

The Statesmen (0-2) entered as the #8 seed and fell 29-15 to Cumberlands (Ky.) in the opening round. WPU was then eliminated from competition with a 31-14 loss to Missouri Baptist on the consolation side.

WPU trailed UC 8-0 before Catherine Steinkamp (Jr., Quincy, Ill., Exercise Science) was able to get her squad on the board with one team point in a 5-2 loss to Presley Anderson at 116 pounds.

130-pounder Devin Patton (So., Plano, Texas, Business Management) then added four more points with a 15-4 technical fall over Amy Algaier, while 136-pounder Adaugo Nwachukwu (Jr., San Jose, Calif., Exercise Science) cruised past Migdalys Ramos 10-0 to close the gap to 17-9.

Unfortunately, the navy and gold lost the next two matches before 170-pounder Ashley Lekas (So., Plano, Texas, Business Management) claimed a forfeit for William Penn’s final points.

WPU could never get going against the Spartans in the day’s second meet. Alexis Montes (Fr., El Paso, Texas, Exercise Science) earned one team point as her season debut concluded in a 3-2 setback to Juliana Diaz at 116 pounds, while 123-pounder Grecia Martinez (So., Horizon City, Texas, Engineering) also collected a point in an 11-9 defeat at the hands of Riley White.

Nwachukwu earned a forfeit, while 143-pounder Isabelle Hawley (So., Winchester, Calif., Sociology) got past Tiyahna Askew 12-4.

Lekas, in her first competition of the season, rolled over Anastasia Hardin 10-0 to cap the team’s scoring.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Thursday to host Central Methodist in a Heart of America Athletic Conference dual meet at 7 p.m.
