Oskaloosa–Due to numerous other programs at the top of the national poll also losing during the past two weeks, the William Penn men’s basketball team only dropped one rung as the sixth NAIA Division I poll was released Tuesday.

WPU (26-3, 16-3 Heart), which fell to Central Methodist last Saturday (3-1 since last poll), is now fourth with 203 points. The squad still extends its streak of being in the top five to 16 consecutive polls and being in the top 10 to 19 straight polls.

Every single top-10 program from the last poll lost at least once, therefore keeping the top five relatively unchanged. The Master’s (Calif.) is still #1 with 219 points and eight first-place votes. LSU Shreveport is second, while Pikeville (Ky.) third with the final first-place vote. Columbia (Mo.) rounds out the top five.

Fellow Heart of America Athletic Conference foe Central Methodist is still #7, while Graceland picked up one spot to #23.

William Penn, the top seed in the Heart Tournament, hosts #8 seed MidAmerica Nazarene in the quarterfinals Wednesday at 7 p.m.

WPU in Receiving Votes Section Entering League Tourney

Oskaloosa–Road losses to the two hottest programs in the league hurt the William Penn women’s basketball team as the sixth NAIA Division I poll was released Tuesday.

The Statesmen (21-7, 15-4 Heart), which split their four games over the last two weeks, fell two spots to #32 with six points. The navy and gold will now likely need to make a deep run in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament to earn an at-large bid to nationals.

Shawnee State (Ohio) is the unanimous #1 with 219 points and all nine first-place votes. Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.), Campbellsville (Ky.), Westmont (Calif.), and Oklahoma City round out the top five.

MidAmerica Nazarene tops the Heart contingency at #8, while league regular season champion Central Methodist is right behind the Pioneers, jumping seven slots to #9. Benedictine is also in the top 25 at #20, while Baker joins WPU in the receiving votes section at #27.

William Penn, the #2 seed in the Heart Tournament, will find out tonight which squad it hosts in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
