Statesmen Second at Northwest Iowa Invitational

Le Mars–A brilliant first day of play for the William Penn women’s golf team and Brittany Evans (Sr., Fernley, Nev., Business Management) helped the Statesmen to finish high on the leaderboard at the Northwest Iowa National Invitational Monday and Tuesday.

#16 WPU, playing against two other ranked teams and two programs receiving votes, finished second out of 10 teams with a final score of 915 (298-302-315). Karli Kerrigan (Grand View) was under par for both rounds on day one, struggled day two, but still won the event with a final score of 215. Texas Wesleyan was the winning team for the event with a combined score of 902.

Evans equaled the school record for lowest score on 18 holes with a first-round score of one-under 71, tying both the records according to par and total score. She then shot even-par 72 to finish off Monday’s action, setting the school record for 36 holes with a day one total of 143. The second day saw her lose five shots to post a 77 and finish fourth in the individual standings at 220.

Bailee Frayne (So., Garner, Iowa, Elementary Education) almost had as good of a Monday as Evans, shooting 72 and 73. Day two got away from her a little as she finished with a score of 82 and a two-day total of 227 to finish tied for seventh.

Alexis Guimaraes (Sr., San Ramon, Calif., Psychology) had a much better outing than she had a week ago at Bellevue. A 77 and a 78 had her within the top 15 after the first day. Day two saw her finish with a round of 77 to bring her total score to 232 and finish tied for 12th.

Julia Hippely (So., Huron, Ohio, General Accounting) had the fourth-best scores of the team on day one, with a 78 and 80, which had her in the middle of the standings. Day two saw Hippely split the difference with a 79 and finish tied for 18th with at 237.

Jaclyn Wojciechowski (Fr., Graytown, Ohio, Business Management) struggled on day one on the first 18 holes, but improved on the second round to bring homes scores of 90 and 84. She once again improved on day two, notching an 81 on the final 18 as she again brought her scores down as the tournament went along. She finished tied for 31 in the individual standings, with a combined score of 255.

“It was a great tournament for us all in all,” said head coach Bailey Rimes. “The girls threw down three really solid rounds, with some really great play coming on the first day. Of course, dropping a few shots during the last round stung a little bit. However, they walked away with a lot of confidence and the realization of the opportunity we have to make this season special. We have a lot of good momentum to build from this tournament. It is early in the year and we’re eager to get back out there.”

Next Up: The Statesmen will play Mount Mercy (RV) at home at Edmunson Golf Course on Sep. 23.
