Statesmen Power Past Cougars, Remain Perfect in Heart

April 13th, 2026

Columbia, Mo.–The William Penn men’s lacrosse team scored the night’s first 14 goals and cruised to a 21-5 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over Columbia Saturday.

No. 6 WPU (9-1, 6-0 Heart) held a solid 53-33 edge in shots over Columbia (7-5, 4-2 Heart), putting 38 of those attempts on goal.

It took the visitors just 63 seconds to get on the board as Everett Breniser (So., Centennial, Colo., Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management) fired a pass from Garrett Katrana (So., Parker, Colo., Industrial Technology) past the CC goalkeeper. It was part of a seven-goal first quarter with Breniser book-ending the scoring with an unassisted goal late in the quarter. The assist was the first of six for Katrana, who earlier in the week broke the collegiate record (all levels) for single-game assists.

Sandwiched between Breniser’s successes, Harley Williams (Sr., Edmonton, Alberta, Political Science) (twice), Nate Levy (So., Lynwood, Wash., Biology), Max Barr (Jr., West Des Moines, Iowa, Business Management), and Kenny Bohney (Sr., Moorhead, Minn., Exercise Science) also struck the netting.

The second stanza witnessed a similar output with six different goal-scorers in Breniser, Katrana, Bohney, Lucas Cox (Fr., Memphis, Tenn., Kinesiology), Blake Cyboron (Sr., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Industrial Technology), and Matt Scott (Fr., Denver, Colo., Sports Management). Four of the winners were unassisted.

Up 13-0 at intermission, the navy and gold did not slow down in the third. Levy extended the scoring streak to 14 just 16 seconds into the second half before the Cougars finally broke through five minutes later.

Columbia actually scored back-to-back times, but WPU shut down any threat of a comeback with three straight scores in a span of just 42 seconds. Isaac Heitschmidt (Fr., Oregon City, Ore., Industrial Technology) was one of those scorers, while the visitors added two more goals in the waning minutes of the period.

Scott, who finished with three goals, capped William Penn’s offensive efforts with the squad’s lone fourth-quarter scores.

Breniser topped the victors with four winners, while Bohney (also three assists) and Williams matched Scott with three scores. Levy contributed two goals as well.

The Statesmen held a 44-35 advantage in ground balls Saturday. Bohney’s seven ground balls were a team high, while Cox and Nolan Soller (Fr., Owatonna, Minn., Industrial Technology) added six apiece.

William Penn only captured 15 of the 30 faceoffs, but was excellent in clearing the ball out of its defensive end, succeeding on 20 of 22 occasions (CC was 16-for-22). The victors also only committed 24 turnovers, compared to 32 mistakes made by the Cougars.

Bryce Campbell (Sr., Meridian, Idaho, Kinesiology) was his team’s most effective faceoff specialist, going 11-for-18 overall. The goalkeeping duo of Connor Russell (Sr., Grand Haven, Mich., Applied Computer Science) and Matt Hollenbaugh (So., Saugus, Calif., Sports Management) both posted five saves in the victory.

“This is what we are capable of when we put everything together,” Head Coach Luke Christiansen said. “I am proud of the team for a great all-around effort. If we can build off this win, we can accomplish some good things.”

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Wednesday to host Missouri Baptist in Heart play at 7 p.m.
