Statesmen Gain First Win of 2014 in Triangular Split

The Statesmen (1-3) began the evening with a 3-1 win over host WWU (25-17, 13-25, 25-23, 25-21) before being swept 3-0 by Central Methodist (Mo.) (22-25, 19-25, 18-25).
WPU 3, William Woods 1–WPU was actually outhit .244-.238, but took advantage of 17 service errors by the Owls.
Kayce Skocko (Jr., Watsonville, Calif., Business Management) and Kylie Giger (Jr., Elkhart, Ind., Exercise Science) each notched double figures with ten kills, while Leyra Jusino (Jr., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) assisted on 29 points and had two aces. Emily McHugh (Jr., Plainfield, Ill., Pre-Law & Psychology) also contributed six kills.
Danielle Breeher (Jr., St. Louis, Mo., Undecided) finished with 18 digs and Skocko assisted on two blocks.
Central Methodist 3, WPU 0–The Statesmen struggled to an attacking deficit of .316-.064. The trio of Giger, Skocko, and McHugh all managed five winners. Jusino had 12 assists in addition to five aces, while Breeher dug 14 hitting attempts.
Coach Carlson Said–“We really clicked well in our first match. I talked to our players yesterday about trusting in each other and after we lost the second set, we dug down and bounced back to play really well in the third and fourth sets.”
“We were really flat against Central Methodist and they just outhit us. We are still adjusting some things and will continue to figure it out.”
Next Up–William Penn travels to Chicago, Ill. Friday and Saturday for the Saint Xavier Tournament. On Friday, the Statesmen meet host SXU at 4 p.m. and then play Siena Heights (Mich.) at 6 p.m. On Saturday, WPU takes on Roosevelt (Ill.) at 10 a.m. and Spring Arbor (Mich.) at noon.
