Oskaloosa–The William Penn softball team will travel to the Bluegrass State as it competes in the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round next week.

#27 seed William Penn (36-18) will travel to Columbia, Ky. to play in the four-team, double-elimination tournament. The Statesmen enter as the #3 seed and will open the event against #2 seed and #10 nationally-ranked Lindsey Wilson (45-9) on Monday at 5 p.m.

#8 Saint Xavier (Ill.) (45-7-1) is the top seed, while unranked Cornerstone (Mich.) (25-16) is the #4 seed. Those two teams will face off Monday at 2 p.m.

This is the second year that softball has utilized an Opening Round format; prior national tournaments saw all qualifiers compete at one site.

#3 seed (#27 overall) William Penn–Mike Christner, in his 13th season, is leading the Statesmen to their first Opening Round appearance, but their fourth NAIA Nationals appearance all-time (first since 2012–2-9 all-time record). William Penn earned its bid as the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament Champion.

William Penn is led by MCC Pitcher of the Year Jennifer Whitehead (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) and Player of the Year Brittanee Grove (Jr., Runnells, Iowa, Elementary Education). Five others (four first-teamers) also received all-conference recognition.

The Statesmen, winners of ten of their last 11, are outscoring opponents 360-165 and outhitting them .320-.221.

#1 seed (#8 overall) Saint Xavier–Myra Minuskin, in her 14th season, has the Cougars back in the Opening Round (won their Opening Round tournament last year). Saint Xavier earned its bid as the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Runner-Up.

Saint Xavier is led by CCAC Pitcher of the Year Nicole Nonnemahcer. A total of three players were on the first team, while three others claimed second-team recognition.

The Cougars, who started 37-3, are 8-4-1 over their last 13 games. They are outscoring opponents 257-61 and outhitting them .299-.170

#2 seed (#10 overall) Lindsey Wilson–David Dews, in his first season, has the Blue Raiders back in the Opening Round (2-2 last year). Lindsey Wilson earned its bid as the Mid-South Conference Regular Season Champion.

Lindsey Wilson is led by MSC Pitcher of the Year Jordan Hood. A total of six players were on the first team, while two claimed second-team recognition.

The Blue Raiders, who started 37-5, have lost four of their last 12 games. They are outscoring opponents 390-164 and outhitting them .356-.229.

#4 seed (unranked) Cornerstone–Jim Farrell, in his 14th season, is leading the Golden Eagles to their first Opening Round appearance. Cornerstone earned its bid as the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament Runner-Up.

Cornerstone had three first-team all-WHAC players and one honorable mention. The Golden Eagles, who started 10-10, won six in a row before dropping their last two games. They are outscoring opponents 193-166 and outhitting them .288-.247.
