Statesmen Conclude Calendar Year with Double-Digit Victory

Elgin, Ill.–With more than half of its points coming from off the bench, the William Penn women’s basketball team defeated Cardinal Stritch 72-54 to wrap up the Judson Christmas Classic Tuesday.

WPU (9-3) won its fifth game in a row, outshooting the Wolves (6-8) 45.9%-40.4%, including hitting 41.9% from behind the arc. Brittany West (Jr., Shakopee, Minn., Sports Management) and Kate Ylitalo (Sr., Maple Plain, Minn., Biology) each knocked down four trifectas as the victors made 13 overall.

The navy and gold were up the entire way (just one tie at 5-5), leading 21-15 after the first quarter and 37-25 at halftime. William Penn played its best after the break, extending the advantage to as much as 23 in the final stanza before coasting to the win.

West paced her squad with 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting; she was one of three players to also corral five rebounds. WPU outrebounded CSU 36-27 and tallied three fewer turnovers (14-17), leading to a 20-14 edge in points off turnovers and a 15-7 mark in second-chance points.

The contest featured only 16 total fouls with the teams combining for just 14 free throws; the Statesmen were 3-for-4 at the stripe.

Ylitalo was next on the scoring list with 12 points, while Brenda Pennington (Sr., Hammond, Ind., Psychology) produced in all facets with 11 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and five steals.

Bailey Reardon (Fr., River Falls, Wis., Elementary Education) and Makenzie Pezley (Sr., Keokuk, Iowa, Elementary Education) both had huge afternoons in non-starting roles with 11 points apiece. The duo, along with West, tallied a total of 38 points for the winning side.

Haley Mullinnix (Jr., West Branch, Iowa, Sports Management) contributed five points Tuesday as well.

“Our bench came through big tonight,” Head Coach Steve Williamson said. “Bailey Reardon, Brittany West, and Makenzie Pezley all gave us great minutes and made big plays.”

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Saturday to host Baker in Heart of America Athletic Conference action at 12 p.m.
