Statesmen Compete at Culver-Stockton Tournament

Quincy, Ill.– The Statesmen men’s golf team competed in the Culver-Stockton Wildcat Classic hosted at Spring Lake Country Club Sunday and Monday. Spring Lake Country Club is an 18-hole private golf course that plays around 6,500 yards and features a par-72 layout.

The Statesmen concluded the tournament with a two-round total of 668 (337-331) and a third-place finish out of three teams. Culver-Stockton took home the team title by shooting a 632 (318-314) over the two days.

Jordan Lester (Grad., Lamoni, Iowa, Master’s of Sports Management) and Cameron Johnson (Jr., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Business Management) both placed in the top 10 as they finished with a two-day total of 163 (87-76) and 167 (80-87), respectively. Also competing for the varsity squad was Jonathan Jarvis (Jr., Burlington, Iowa, Business Management) (87-81–168), Corey Hicks (Fr., Lake City, Iowa, Mechanical Engineering) (83-89–172), and Brock Hartley (Jr., Wilton, Iowa, Business Management) (90-87–177). Mateo Varese (Sr., Moravia, Iowa, Business Management and Human Resource Management) (85-92–177) also competed in the event as an individual.

“Today was disappointing,” said Head Coach Steve Tucker. “We know that our squad is better than the scores we put up today. For our first multiple-day travel tournament, it shows the areas in which we need to improve, both on and off the golf course.”

Up Next: The Statesmen are slated to take on Columbia County Club in Columbia, Mo. next Monday and Tuesday in the Columbia Invitational.
