Indianola–The William Penn men’s golf team battled windy conditions, but came out on top as it won the team crown at the Simpson Invitational Wednesday.

Playing for the first time in 16 days, WPU was first out of five teams with a score of 304 at the par-71 Indianola Country Club, holding off Grand View by 12 strokes.

The victory is the squad’s first of the season and the first since taking the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships last spring.

Oliver Stanway (Jr., Leicester, England, Sports Management) led the 32-player field with a 74 to earn his first medalist honor in the navy and gold. It is the second title of the campaign for WPU.

Zachary Chegwidden (Jr., Essex, England, Business Management) was close behind, placing third at 76, while Juan Lugo (Fr., Lecheria, Venezuela) and Spencer Tucker (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) both tied for fourth at 77.

Oscar Florez Martinez (So., Gignon, Spain, Business Management) rounded out the varsity scoring at 85 to finish 19th overall.

Playing as individuals, Ethan Kaiser (So., Belle Plaine, Iowa, Education) and Tony Rocha (Jr., West Branch, Iowa, Business Management) each tied for 28th at 95, while Jacob Tyler was 32nd at 122.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Fort Madison next Tuesday to compete in the Iowa Wesleyan Classic. Play will be contested at Schaffer Memorial Golf Course.
