Loras squeaks past Central men’s soccer team

DUBUQUE – A penalty kick set up the only goal of the match as Loras College defeated the Central College men’s soccer team 1-0 Saturday afternoon.

Central (5-7-4) bows out of the American Rivers Conference tournament and Loras (12-3-2) advances to the semifinals.

A foul in the box in the 32 nd minute gave the Duhawks an opportunity from the penalty spot. Morgan Finkenbinder (junior, Elkhorn, Neb., Skutt Catholic HS) saved the initial attempt but the ball ricocheted off the post and back for Joseph Sorce to follow his own miss with a goal.

The Dutch offense musted just five shot attempts, with its only offering on net coming in the 64th minute from Cooper Collins (junior, Clive, Waukee Northwest HS).

Finkenbinder finished with seven total saves as the Dutch defense withstood 17 shot attempts by a Loras offense which held a 55%-45% advantage in possession.
